Andy - His Journey with Diabetes
A Doxie with Diabetes
Andy was only five when he was diagnosed with diabetes. Many dogs have diabetes and do well and live a normal life, but Andy had other issues that complicated this disease. I am going to write our journey here. To help me cope with the loss and also help someone else going through the same struggle. Diabetes is a complicated disease and never affects two people/dogs the exact same way. There is no magic formula to treat it. I only wish there were.  This is an ongoing project that I will write when time permits.
The signs of diabetes are weight loss, excessive thirst and urination. I only noticed the dramatic weight loss in Andy. It was because of weight loss that I took him to the Vet. He needed to lose weight but I knew something had to be wrong because his appetite had not changed nor his food intake. I was shocked at the diagnosis. I had never heard of a dog having diabetes. By the time Andy was diagnosed he was in ketosis and had pancreatitis. He spent the next three days in a hospital on IV drip and insulin. Coming home meant two shots a day of insulin and a strict diet. I was able to buy him another two years this way. Something I would do over and over again given the same choice.

In the end, Andy developed aspiration pneumonia and his lungs collapsed. After 24 hours in an oxygen chamber we made the decision to let him cross over. He died in my arms as I told him over and over how much I love him.
